The Doncaster ITT Partnership was formed in 2002 to help Doncaster schools recruit, train and retain qualified teachers through ‘home-grown’ schools-based training. Since then the Partnership has trained hundreds of Primary and Secondary teachers. Most chose to stay and teach in Doncaster, often in their training school. Many have secured senior management positions and some are now responsible for coordinating and delivering teacher training in their own schools.

We believe our ‘model’ of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) works because the Partnership is more than just the sum of its parts: the Local Authority (Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council), local schools, academies and the University of Hull – it is a genuine Partnership of people who passionately believe that teacher training can and should be delivered with the student (or trainee) at the very heart of why and how we deliver training.

Headteachers, Training Coordinators, Mentors, Tutors and former Trainees from Partner schools and academies (Secondary, Primary & Special schools) all know what makes a difference to student teachers’ learning. Because of this they are best placed to steer the provider’s Strategic Management Board, enabling the Partnership to consistently deliver ‘Outstanding’ trainee attainment (Ofsted 2012).

All of our training is delivered in Doncaster at central training venues or in Alliance schools and academies. This includes the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) which is delivered by colleagues from the University of Hull, at both face-to-face workshops and via on-line support.

Unlike most providers we do not insist that our trainees complete a PGCE, so this means that they don’t have to pay for the optional additional qualification if they don’t want to. However, we strongly advise completing the PGCE, as it enables trainees to progress through a programme of part-time study to achieve 60 credits at Level 7 and to the award of the PGCE, in addition to achieving their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The PGCE is an internationally recognised teaching qualification and the programme is fully integrated into the main QTS course and enhances the in-school and central training by adding additional academic studies. The majority of our trainees chose to complete the PGCE in addition to their QTS, some as a good first step towards completing their Masters.

The Partnership doesn’t differentiate between SCITT & School Direct trainee teachers, as our schools share the same passion and vision when selecting and training future teachers for Doncaster. Students learn alongside each other regardless of which programme they are on, receiving the same levels of support and training, delivered for and by schools working collaboratively.

As a genuinely schools-based provider, we can do this as our schools are not just notionally ‘in partnership’ with an ITT provider they ARE the Partnership.

Training Team

With a background in Human Resources, retail & project management, Keith helped to form the Partnership in 2002, with the first schools-based trainees starting in September 2003.

Supported by the ITT Partnership Coordinator and the team of Primary & Secondary ITT Liaison Tutors, the ITT Partnership Manager responds to the strategic direction of the Partnership’s Strategic Management Board, which is co-Chaired by the two Alliance Lead Schools (Kirk Sandall Infant School and Ridgewood School).

Keith is passionate about Doncaster schools recruiting, training, retaining and continuing to develop high-quality teachers and is a long standing member of both the Regional ITT Provider and Schools-Based Provider Networks.

Having worked closely with schools since 2003 in various roles, Karen joined the Partnership Team in 2009 and has developed the ITT Partnership Coordinator role over the years to become an invaluable member of the team.

As the ITT Partnership Coordinator, Karen is both the trainees’ and schools’ first point of contact for any and all ITT related matters, as well as for prospective applicants wishing to find out more about schools-based ITT in Doncaster.

Acknowledged as an expert on ITT administration systems, Karen is now the Lead Administrator for the North of England for the National Association of School-Based Teacher Trainers (NASBTT).

A former Headteacher in the East Ridings of Yorkshire, with over 20 years teaching experience, Penny joined the Partnership in 2012 as an ITT Tutor.

She became the Primary Lead Tutor just a year later and now manages a team of 5 other Primary tutors (all former Doncaster Headteachers) who, working closely with partner schools, collectively oversee, support and quality assure the trainees’ development.

A former School Improvement Adviser, with nearly 40 years teaching experience, Shirley joined the Partnership in 2006 as an ITT Tutor.

She became the Secondary Lead Tutor in 2013 and now manages a team of 3 other highly experienced Secondary tutors who, working closely with partner schools, collectively oversee, support and quality assure the trainees’ development.

Partner Schools

Kirk Sandall Infant School

Queen Mary Crescent, Kirk Sandall, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN3 1JT

The Lead School for Primary – Partners in Learning Teaching School Alliance:

As an Ofsted graded ‘Outstanding’ school, Kirk Sandall Infant became an academy in 2012 and was designated as a Teaching School (‘Partners in Learning’) in 2013 in association with Bentley High Street Primary (Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ – March 2015). Then, in partnership with the neighbouring Junior school, became a Multi Academy Trust (MAT) in 2015.

Teaching Schools are designated to take a lead role in leading the training and professional development of teachers, from Initial Teacher Training (ITT) to Headship as well as contributing to the raising of standards of the Alliance through school to school support.

Partners in Learning (Primary) has created an inclusive and productive partnership focused on the improvement of teaching and learning and improved outcomes for pupils across all schools within the Teaching School Alliance (TSA).

Almost 100 local Primary schools and academies are Associate Members of the Teaching School and around half of them support a trainee teacher on either the SCITT or School Direct routes each year.

The Teaching School utilises the expertise from across the large Primary Alliance to support and improve the quality of teaching and learning, the experience of students engaged in ITT and improve the outcomes for pupils within schools from across the region.

In 2017, Partners in Learning was designated as a ‘Research School’ in association with the Education Endowment Foundation.

Ridgewood School

Barnsley Road, Scawsby, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN5 7UB

Ridgewood is the Lead School for Secondary – Doncaster Regional Alliance For Teacher Training Secondary (DRAFTTs):

Ridgewood’s core values emphasise high standards, pride in everything they do, and working together as a school community to achieve the best, both inside and beyond the classroom. Nobody at Ridgewood settles for second best.

It is important to the school that their students not only achieve great results, but develop as people who are ready to meet any challenges they face in the future with confidence and self-assurance. They want to give students opportunities that let them grow both intellectually and personally, and enable them to develop their own unique characters. Students at Ridgewood are given the means to contribute to both the school community and the wider community beyond. They educate the whole child so that students immerse themselves wholeheartedly in school life, and leave with a desire to contribute to society.

The school offers students an environment in which they can flourish, and see the results of their own hard work pay off. With the help of their dedicated staff, they can prepare for the road ahead and begin their journey into adult life equipped with the skills they need to ensure a happy and successful future.

Ofsted graded the school as Good overall (Oct 2015), with some aspects of Teaching that are ‘Outstanding’ especially in the 6th Form.

As Lead School of an Alliance of 9 large and diverse Secondary schools, each able to offer their own unique and contrasting experiences to trainee teachers, Ridgewood co-Chairs the Doncaster ITT Partnership’s Strategic Management Board (alongside the Primary alliance) and steers the Doncaster Regional Alliance For Teacher Training Secondary (DRAFTTS).
