As a multi-academy trust we want to be known for placing Students first: raising standards and transforming lives

Martyn Oliver, CEO, Outwood Grange Academies Trust

The Outwood Institute of Education (OIE) offers a School Direct programme that strives to develop, support and celebrate excellent trainee teachers who are well-prepared for the profession. We are part of a large alliance of over 80 schools; these partnerships enable us to provide training that is high quality, purposeful and based on first-hand experiences.

We have a strong partnership with Sheffield Hallam University who are a national centre of education and are recognised for their excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. This partnership creates a collaborative model of training. Additionally, we are excited to launch our new partnership with Durham University for our 2017/18 cohort of trainees. Durham University prides itself on being a world top 100 university and their Education Department is ranked number one in the UK by the 2018 Complete University Guide.

Consistently, every action taken and every decision made by our trainees will reflect our desire to put children first. Our School Direct programme allows our trainees to have a huge impact on and improve the life chances of the children within our Family of Schools. We believe that we have the capacity and the experience to inspire students and staff to bring about rapid and sustained improvement for the benefit of the Local Authorities and communities that we work in.

Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) is recognised nationally as a high performing chain of schools and is the highest performing Family of Schools in the North of England. We are a multi-academy sponsor and the Family of Schools currently comprises of twenty-three schools who work together to ensure that all children irrespective of their starting point receive an excellent education.

Our School Direct programme allows trainees to work alongside innovative, ambitious and student-focused teachers who are passionate about raising standards and transforming lives.

Successful Trainees
The majority of our trainees were graded as good or outstanding in 2017 and 100% of trainees recommend our programme to prospective applicants. Our School Direct programme is supportive, challenging and rewarding with more than 90% of applicants going onto employment at the end of it.

Successful Training
100% of our training sessions were given an average rating of outstanding last year. Our School Direct trainees enjoy a comprehensive training programme facilitated by Specialist Leaders in Education (SLEs). These collaborative sessions are led by teachers who have been nationally recognised as outstanding in their respective field and therefore offer training which is underpinned by theoretical knowledge and informed by current pedagogical excellence.

Successful Support
100% of trainees rated the support given as part of our programme as outstanding. Outwood Institute of Education prides itself on the amount of support it offers each and every School Direct trainee. We aim to put students first by ensuring all of our trainees are given the training, opportunities and support required in order to help them develop into excellent teachers. This support comes from the OIE School Direct team, the mentor, the host teachers and the ITT Coordinator. Our mentors have all completed training to ensure that their involvement has a great impact.

100% of trainees stated that our induction programme meant they made exceptional progress at the start of the course. This induction period consists of five events in July and August where our trainees can meet other trainees, discuss and learn before the programme starts in September.

Also, we use a monthly progress tracker to ensure that all trainees feel well-supported, have access to swift intervention and can celebrate their progress throughout the year.

‘Literacy development has moved at a pace this term.’
‘The college has received outstanding support from Outwood Grange Academies Trust.’

Ofsted November 2012

The second monitoring visit took place in March 2013.
‘The quality of teaching is improving very quickly and is at least good in the majority of lessons’

We recognise that, as parents when you choose a school for your children, you entrust the school with something that is very precious – years that are very important for your child – years that cannot be replaced if their time at school is not successful.

Our teachers are expected to bring out the best in their students and to recognise the individuality of all as they progress through the school. We offer a curriculum that is diverse enough to enable all students to succeed and we will continue to expand the opportunities available as the world to which students will emerge continues to change.

We also offer wide ranging support to students who require extra guidance through their secondary school years and recognise the immense support that parents give to their children so that, together with yourselves, we can enable your children to thrive.

We believe that all students are of equal worth and are committed to providing life chances for all. We will celebrate the cultural differences between students and seek to ensure that all within the school community are guided towards developing a sense of responsibility for themselves, each other, their community and the wider world.

Above all we want to ensure that all the young people who attend Outwood Academy Newbold achieve their individual potential so that their young talent and youthful enthusiasm is channelled into developing confident young adults of whom you, as parents, can justly be proud.

This website will give you a flavour of what the school has to offer. If you decide upon Outwood Academy Newbold as the choice for your child we look forward to working with you in the years to come and trust that the relationship between yourselves, your child and the school will be successful.

The amazing thing about Outwood Academy Portland, is what happens every day in every lesson.

It is inspiring to find an educational environment where staff and students strive every day to be better than they were yesterday. At Outwood Academy Portland, we have teachers who constantly develop their skills and expand their repertoire in order to provide students with an outstanding learning experience that challenges them every hour of every day. When this is coupled with first rate classroom assistants, mentors, tutors and inclusion support assistants – it creates an ethos where everyone values every learning opportunity and devotes their time to creating experiences that move students’ learning forward.

However, the most remarkable aspect of Outwood Academy Portland is the students themselves. Their commitment to learning and to facing challenging problems is what moves us, and makes our staff want to strive for the levels they now reach. Our students show amazing resilience, a love of learning and a thirst to be the best that they can be. This ignites every teacher’s enthusiasm for their subject, resulting in an outstanding learning environment where staff and students value and respect each other. We now have an academy where we can see the greatness in each other, which enthuses and motivates us all.

As a result, there is no wonder that we are proud to be part of the community that is Outwood Academy Portland, and value the time we spend here – on our journey to providing a level of education that truly is world class.

Outwood Primary Academy Littleworth Grange is a large and popular school for children aged 3-11, located in an attractive new building which was designed to provide outstanding opportunities for teaching and learning. Our school is an important part of the community of Lundwood, near Barnsley, and prides itself on its strong ethos of caring and nurturing, promoting positive behaviour by respecting and encouraging a high level of pupil participation in all aspects of school life. The school holds a number of awards including the Activemark and the Healthy Schools Silver Award.

The school provides extended services such as study support, family learning courses and community access to their facilities. We have an Early Years Unit (including a 78-place nursery), ensuring that children receive an inclusive, personalised education right from the start. Children join FS2 (reception) in September, so classes are sometimes mixed age but we aim to keep single-age, mixed ability classes wherever possible. At present there are 404 pupils on roll, with a further 33 children in nursery making a total of 437.

Ethos and Values

As a school and Multi Academy Trust, we firmly believe that the whole point of schools is that children come first and everything we do must reflect that single goal.

We pride ourself on delivering a high standard of education within a safe, caring and positive environment where, irrespective of their starting points, all children make progress and achieve their full potential. We believe all children have a talent and children leave Outwood Primary Academy Lofthouse Gate with a clear sense of what that talent is and how they need to further develop that talent to succeed in the wider world.

We strive to make our pupil’s learning as exciting and enjoyable as we can – ensuring all aspects of learning are rich, enhanced and engage all learners. We work to enable our children to become successful, independent learners, to achieve the best they can in order to prepare them for life beyond Outwood Primary Academy Lofthouse Gate.
