The Sheffield SCITT, alongside the two universities, is one of only three accredited providers of Initial Teacher Training based in Sheffield and the only school based accredited provider.
Accredited in 2011 the Sheffield SCITT is operated by outstanding Sheffield School Notre Dame High School. The Sheffield SCITT and its 18 partner schools are passionate about recruiting and training outstanding candidates and developing them into outstanding teachers and future leaders in education. We do this through 100% School Based Training. Research with our partnership’s Headteachers established that when recruiting Newly Qualified Teachers they preferred candidates who had spent the whole year in school being trained by serving outstanding teachers, being involved in the full calendar cycle of the school year and every aspect of the professional teacher’s role in their schools. Their experience was that 100% school based training resulted in NQTs who were better prepared for the rigours of qualified teaching and to progress more quickly in their careers in their schools.

A comment from one of our trainees illustrates why we use this approach:

“Having interviewed a number of teachers in my role as a School Governor, I had decided that 100% school-based seemed to be the best, most comprehensive preparation for the challenges and reality of school life.”

This approach may explain why in 2015 100% of our trainees who completed teacher training with us, passed and were offered jobs, many now working in our Partnership schools.

Training Team

The course is written and overseen by Laura Bullars, Deputy Director of Hallam Teaching School Alliance. Laura’s teaching style and the fast track career she has followed is the inspiration behind the course. Laura quickly became the Head of Maths at Notre Dame High School- a maths department whose national reputation led to Hallam TSA leading the South Yorkshire Maths Hub. She became an Assistant Headteacher after only 7 years of teaching. Our course aimed to help highflying graduates follow her flight path.

The Primary School Course Co-Ordinator is Fiona Rigby. Fiona is Head of St Catherine’s Primary Academy in Sheffield. Fiona’s teaching career includes teaching at Corpus Christie, Miles Platting in Manchester, Acting Head at St Joseph the Worker in Salford before joining St Catherine’s in 2000.

Jenna is an RE teacher, a learning improvement partner, a Specialist Leader in Education as well as being part of the Doncaster Rovers Ladies football team. Jenna has also designed and delivered NQT and RQT programmes. This has given Jenna a wealth of experience of working with schools and people from all different contexts. Jenna’s goal as Secondary Co-ordinator is to make sure none of our trainees feel that they “are not alone” on their journey to becoming a teacher. Jenna is looking forward to seeing you at our open days where you can discuss the programme with us.

Jonathan Lear wrote and lead’s the course at St Catherine’s. Jonathan is far more than St Catherine’s Deputy Headteacher. Described as having a breath-taking understanding of how to engage children, Jonathan Lear is an award-winning teacher and education consultant. He has worked for many years on a compelling mix of inspirational teaching strategies, and has shared his passion for learning as an AST, Deputy Headteacher, and associate of Independent Thinking Limited. His recent book Guerrilla Teaching gives an account of his educational philosophy that underpins the course and its rave reviews talk about the common sense approach grounded in what really works in classrooms. This is because Jonathan still teaches and will not ask our trainees to do anything they couldn’t observe him doing himself. Follow Jonathan on twitter @GuerrillaEd read his blog Guerrilla Education and watch him talk about his philosophy on YouTube.
