Red Kite Teacher Training

Red Kite Teacher Training is a partnership of Yorkshire schools across all phases: primary, secondary and special, from inner city locations to rural contexts, that have come together to share our skills, experience, talent and capacity to help improve the learning and achievement of young people across Yorkshire and the Humber.

Our excellent Initial Teacher Training programmes, leading to QTS, are tailored to individual needs and aspirations. Whether you are a recent graduate, or you are considering a change of career, our courses will give you the best foundation for a great career in teaching.

With a proven track record of supporting and bringing new talented teachers into the profession, our experienced practitioners deliver outstanding training in schools within our partnership

Our courses also Lead to a PGCE from the world class School of Education at the University of Leeds. Our Trainees have access to student facilities and support at the University of Leeds, including sports facilities, accommodation services, learning resources and student support services.

“Excellence for all”

The Red Kite Learning Trust was founded to provide a supportive structure for schools working in partnership to help ensure all their young people can achieve success.

Red Kite Learning Trust schools work together to improve the learning and achievement of all their young people. The Trust secures excellence for all, providing world class opportunities for the young people in its schools. The schools achieve this by continuously striving for the best: improving, innovating and reflecting.

The Red Kite Learning Trust is at the heart of the Red Kite Alliance, and the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub, the Yorkshire Leadership Community and the new regional Computing Hub.

Training Team

Richard is Executive Headteacher of Harrogate Grammar School and CEO of Red Kite Alliance. Richard started his teaching career in Leicester before moving to Leeds as a Head of Department. Having worked as a Deputy Headteacher in a Bradford school he took up his first Headship in Leeds in 2001 before joining Harrogate Grammar School as Headteacher in 2007.

Richard is a National Leader of Education and has worked as an Ofsted Inspector but much prefers to focus on his work as Headteacher and Director of the Red Kite Alliance, a thriving partnership of over 40 schools in the Leeds, Bradford and North Yorkshire area.

More recently, Richard has become CEO of the Red Kite Learning Trust, a growing MAT built on the same strong collaborative values that has supported and sustained the Alliance.

Alison Hesley has oversight of our Primary and Secondary courses and leads our secondary programme. Alison was formerly an Assistant Headteacher in a secondary school in York and a Partnership Manager for the University of Leeds PGCE.

Prior to this she worked for a local authority delivering the National Key Stage 3 Strategy supporting teachers in foundation subjects and developing training on coaching to support teacher development.

Jen Berry, Deputy Director, leads our primary programme and is our Wellbeing Lead for both phases. Jen was formerly an Assistant Headteacher and Special Needs Coordinator and developed the Red Kite School Direct course prior to our accreditation as a SCITT.
