The White Rose Alliance (WRA) is an alliance of schools across North & West Yorkshire providing high quality (unsalaried) School Direct secondary teacher training for graduates across most subjects. To help deliver and accredit our School Direct courses, the WRA works in partnership with 3 quality university partners, Leeds Trinity University, Sheffield Hallam University and York St John University. Our lead school and base is King James’s School in Knaresborough.

About the WRA

With extensive initial teacher training experience amassed under the previous Teaching School designation since 2002, the White Rose Alliance was established at the inception of School Direct in September 2014. The WRA aims to develop outstanding, adaptable, reflective teachers in a supportive, enriching environment, well-prepared for their future career. Whilst we continue to grow our network of partner schools, our underlying ethos to be large enough to offer our trainees as much variety of experience during their training year as possible, yet remain a smaller provider to enable us know each trainee as an individual & provide the most appropriate support & environment for them to develop to their full potential, remains. We are a very inclusive provider being fortunate to have had cohorts comprising a mix of recent graduates, those who have had a gap year or have been in employment for a short while after graduating and those looking to change career after a significant time in employment. All bring a wealth of different experiences, knowledge & dynamics to each cohort.

We are very proud of the WRA trainees who have completed their training with us so far, with 99% achieving outstanding or good final grades & 90% gaining employment after the course; some within WRA partner schools. (figures across all cohorts)

Training with the WRA

WRA School Direct training is primarily school-based (through 2 school placements) with regular university attendance and contact, underpinned by a weekly professional studies programme held at our lead school. All WRA trainees (regardless of their subject or link university) attend our professional studies sessions (September to March) and find that in addition to learning key teaching and learning skills, it is also a welcome regular opportunity for them to meet with, and obtain support from, their peers and WRA staff. Our School Direct courses are full-time over one year running from September to June. Successful completion of the course means trainees can achieve a PGCE qualification and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Placement schools are allocated taking into account a number of factors including trainee home location, partner school subject availability, trainee ability to drive or reliance on public transport, trainee school preferences, etc. Not all WRA partner schools are able to offer placements in every subject & this can vary each year. On occasions therefore, it may be necessary for the WRA to arrange a placement for a trainee in a non-WRA partner school. All trainees however, wherever they are placed, are assured of the same White Rose Alliance experience, support and contact.

The WRA endeavours to be a very supportive provider and are fortunate to have skilled and experienced practitioners as mentors in our partner schools who receive annual training from the WRA & respective link university. All WRA partner school & university staff work closely together in the interests of developing each trainee into the best teacher they can be.

Training Team

As WRA Lead Teacher, Jo is responsible for the strategic planning and delivery of the WRA School Direct programme, along with attending regular meetings with University colleagues. Jo plans the Wednesday morning Professional Studies programme and arranges for outstanding teachers to help deliver the sessions. Quality Assurance takes place throughout the two placements to ensure that the trainees are fully supported and receiving high quality mentoring.

Ashley graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2008 studying Physical Education and went on to complete a Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) in 2010. Ashley has since been at King James’s School (lead school for the White Rose Alliance) as head of Boys PE. Ashley has always being passionate about supporting PE trainees on their journey to becoming excellent teachers. Alongside his PE and mentoring role, Ashley is now the lead teacher for the White Rose Alliance. This role has given Ashley a wealth of experience of working with partnership schools and university providers, furthermore people from all different contexts.

Sue provides day to day administrative support to WRA Leads, Mentors, partner schools & of course, our trainees (current, past & future) and is the contact for general enquiries about the School Direct recruitment process, applications and school experience.
